Coaching Team for 2022

At UQBC, although day to day training is in squads, a whole of shed approach is taken and crew boats, particularly for competition, are made up of athletes from all squads.

 

Phil Bourguignon Head Coach

Phil has spent over a decade in the UK and has now returned to UQBC in 2022.  UQBC was the club where Phil won his first World Championship as a coach.  Phil is a former lightweight rower, and was selected on Australian junior teams as a coach in 2003 and 2004.  Phil held the position of AIS Rowing Coach from 2004 to 2006, and then joined Sydney University Rowing Club as Director of Rowing.  Phil has coached Australian U23 and Senior Rowing Teams, and won multiple world medals as a coach.  UQBC is excited to have Phil on board for the 2022/23 season.

 

Richard Powell Men’s High-Performance Sweep coach

Richard has been a member of UQBC since a student athlete in 1980 and went on to be one of the club’s most decorated oarsmen competing at 6 World Championships, Commonwealth Games and 2 Olympic Games. Richard brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Head Coaching role in addition his degree with majors in Exercise Physiology and Biomechanics. He has been coaching directly or consulting and mentoring coaches and athletes one way or another since 1983. Richard brings a new dimension to the Club’s coaching team and his ability to nurture and develop athletes to realise their potential.

 

Michael Russell High-Performance Men’s Sculling Coach

 

Michael is a Rowing Australia accredited Level 3 - Performance Rowing Coach with over 10 years of school, club, State and National rowing coaching experience. Michael has coached crews and individuals to many State, National and International Titles and selection in State and National Teams. He was the Head Coach of the Australian Rowing Team for the INAS Global Games 2019 and has been the coach of the Qld Lightweight Women’s quad since 2018.

While his squad focus is on training in single sculls all athletes are prepared and have the opportunity to train in big boats both sculling and sweep.
