Learn to Row

Get fit and have fun on the Brisbane River with the UQ Sport Learn 2 Row program! Our courses are open to the general public, with a minimum age of 17 years.  Dates for courses are listed below and are subject to change. Enrolments open 4 weeks prior to the start of the course.

Levels:
There are three levels of Learn to Row which you can progress through.

LEVEL 1

This course is for adult beginners to introduce them to sweep oar rowing in a coxed eight boat.  Class size is limited to 9 to ensure that quality coaching is received.  Each course runs for five weeks with two sessions per week (10 sessions in total).  Classes are arranged on various days and times.  During the sessions participants will work through a structured program to ensure that the basic rowing stroke is mastered, knowledge of rowing terminology is gained and basic boat control is established. 

Level 1 Course Cost:

$210 for the course ($21 per lesson).  This includes all coaching at a ratio of 1:9 plus use of equipment and a Guidance Manual.

LEVEL 2

This course is for graduates of the Level 1 program or for those who have some previous experience of rowing.  Level 2 will progress participants to rowing uncoxed boats either fours / quads or doubles / pairs.  Preference for sculling or sweep oar will try to be accommodated at this level.  The aim of the course will be to improve participant’s confidence and ability in different types of boats through covering a range of techniques and training exercises.  Class sizes will be limited to 6 to ensure that quality coaching is received.  Each course runs for five weeks with two sessions per week (10 sessions in total).  Classes are arranged on various days and times.

Level 2 Course Cost:

$230 for the course ($23 per lesson).  This includes all coaching at a ratio of 1:6 and use of equipment.

LEVEL 3

This course is for graduates of the Level 2 programme or for those who have some previous experience of sculling.  Level 3 will progress participants to rowing single sculls.  The aim of the course will be to improve participant’s confidence and ability to row independently in a single scull through covering a range of techniques and training exercises.  Tuition on racing preparation can also be included if desired.  Class sizes will be limited to 4 to ensure that quality coaching is received.  Each course runs for five weeks with two sessions per week (10 sessions in total).  Classes are arranged on various days and times.
Level 3 Course Cost:
$260 for the course ($26 per lesson).  This covers all coaching at a ratio of 1:4 and use of equipment.

Pre-requisites:
You must be able to swim 100m un-assisted.
Enrolment:
All enquires regarding Learn to Row are to be directed to Program Coordinator at rowing@uqs.com.au or 3346 6273.  If the course is full, please contact us and we will put you on the waiting list.
Bring:
  • Your receipt
  • Sandals or thongs that you don't mind getting wet
  • Tight fitting clothes that do not restrict your movement
  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses on a sunny day
  • Water bottle
  • Spare socks
  • Sneakers or running shoes for using the rowing machine / ergometer.
  • NOTE: Shower facilities are available

Parking is available adjacent to the Boat House and opposite the Athletics Track (Green Zone). Cost is $3.00 per day and permits must be displayed on the front of your vehicle. Casual parking is also available near the Aquatic Centre (Purple Zone) for $1.20 per hour. More...
What next?
On completion of the Learn to Row level 3 course, your coach will assess your rowing skill and make a recommendation as to whether you are competent to become a member of the University of Queensland Boat Club.  Membership allows for unsupervised rowing.
You will be able to choose a membership pass to reflect your approach to rowing, whether it's from a social, competitive or elite perspective.
UQBC Membership Categories
Social:
This membership pass is for those who want to row socially but not compete. It is an opportunity to be involved in UQBC's rowing community, stay active and enjoy the benefits of rowing in a social environment.  To obtain this membership you must be competent to row alone.  Level 3 Learn to Row graduates will be considered for this option.
Competitor:
This membership pass is for those who want to row competitively. You can develop your rowing skills and train and compete at any level from development to masters. To obtain this membership you must be competent to row in a supervised crew.  Graduates from Level 2 and Level 3 Learn to Row will be considered for this option.
Athlete Development:
This membership pass is for athletes who wish to receive specialist coaching services and opportunities to compete at the elite level. This pass is by invitation only.
